When you buy a product, you want to know all the details and more right?
To sell a product to someone, you have to tell them why they need it, and what makes it unique. You can’t just rely on good images to sell a product. Having poor, or even no product description, can really hinder your chances of making a sale.
These are our tips on how to write good product descriptions…
Know Who You’re Writing For:
Before you even begin writing your product descriptions, you need to figure out who it is that you’re writing for. Once you know who your audience is, you can start to work out the information you need to include, and what isn’t as necessary. You can also determine the type of language that would be fitting, such as slang or jargon etc.
Focus On The Benefits:
What is it that makes your product a must have? To really sell a product, you have to sell the reason someone NEEDS it. You need to include technical specifications in the product description, so people know exactly what they are getting, they also need to know how the product can help them.
What problem does your product solve? How does it make your customers’ lives better? These are the types of questions you need to answer with your product descriptions.
Make It Sound Natural:
Of course you have to include all of the relevant technical information within the product description, but you don’t want to make it sound like a robot wrote it. Read your descriptions aloud to see if it flows as well as a conversation. If it doesn’t, think about what you would say to a friend about the product. That way you can work out some fun and descriptive language you can include in the text, and most importantly have it sound natural.
Use Power Words:
You might have heard ‘Power Words’ being mentioned before. They are essentially descriptive words that trigger an emotional response from the reader, compelling them to take action.
Here are some examples of power words:

Including these power words in your product descriptions can help you make sales. You can use them to convince customers that your product is worth buying. Again, you need to make sure that the text sounds as natural as possible, so don’t over-stuff your product descriptions with too many power words.
Keep It Consistent:
Most people won’t take the time to actually read through the full product description, unless they are fully interested in the product. This means that you need to make the most important information easy to find. By finding a layout/format that works for you, and applying it to each product page, you are making it so much easier for the customer to find the information they need. Use short paragraphs, bullet points etc. you break up the text and make it easy to scan.
Optimise It:
Something you always need to keep in mind when writing product descriptions is to make sure it is optimised for search engines. SEO is the best way to bring in a constant flow of customers to your site. Making sure you use relevant keywords throughout the descriptions, having good page titles and meta descriptions, and using image tags, all with the keywords in too, is a must if you want to boost your chances of ranking on Google.
Ultimately, the goal is to create a product description that is tailored to your specific audience, so they have all the information they need to make a purchase. Try changing a few of your existing product descriptions to fit these suggestions and see if you see an improvement in sales.
